1841 September 23. State of North Carolina. Pursuant to an Order of the Superior
Court of Law for the County of Richmond made in a Suit therein depending, Bryant
L. Holton against John C. Lampley, directing the Clerk of the said Court to take
an account in the said case after having duly notified both parties of the time
and place of taking said account, proceeded to audit the account of the said Harry Hailey,
deceased, as guardian of the said Holton, at the Courthouse in the Town of Rockingham
and report of said account follows:
Reference to the records of the County Court shew that Harry Hailey qualified as guardian
of Bryant L. Holton at October Session 1821, when as appears from evidence introduced
before me said Holton was in his fourteenth year since the 13th day of April...
By report of committee made to January Session 1822, to divide the Negro property of
James Holton, father of the plaintiff, between himself, John B. Holton and Harry Hailey
in the right of his wife....Elizabeth Hailey who was sworn in this case before me, said
that she thought as well as she could recollect, that Bryant L. Holton lived in
Cherow [S.C.] in 1826 acting as clerk of some merchant. Elizabeth Hailey also states that
Harry gave his ward, Holton, possession of his property, she thinks in the year 1828, the
said Holton having married in 1827, so I will stop the account the year 1827, the account
having only one more year to run before Holton arrives at age....
